Orofacial Myofunctional Treatment and Evaluation

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) involve improper patterns of the muscles of the face and mouth that can impact breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speech. These patterns may include tongue thrust, low tongue posture, mouth breathing, and lip incompetence, which can contribute to dental concerns, orthodontic relapses, and unclear speech.

How can a Speech-Language Pathologist help?

At our clinic, Christy Bisconer M.S. CCC-SLP is a trained orofacial myologist and she can provide an in depth individualized assessment and customized therapy to address the underlying muscle patterns—not just the symptoms. Treatment focuses on improving tongue posture, nasal breathing, lip strength, and coordinated oral movements to support optimal function at rest and during speaking and swallowing. With consistent therapy, clients often see improvements not only in speech clarity, but also in sleep quality, facial development, and overall oral function.

  • Orofacial myofunctional therapy is beneficial for both children and adults
  • SLPS work closely on plan of care via collaboration with orthodontists, dentists, ENTS, and medical providers to support long-term outcomes.
  • Providing structured treatment plans and activities based on assessment results and therapy data.
  • SLPs focus on building new muscle memory and functional habits that carry over into daily life—so changes are lasting, not temporary.
